The Juggling Act of Parenting and Personal Interests

As a parent, you often find yourself at the intersection of nurturing your children and pursuing your own interests. This balance is essential yet fraught with challenges. Many parents yearn for something personal—be it a favorite job, a hobby, or even volunteering in the community. While these pursuits can be incredibly fulfilling, they also carry the risk of additional stress during tough times.

Facing Adversities: A Personal Experience

I vividly recall a particularly challenging time in my life when both my daughter struggled with her junior-high entrance exams and I faced an unexpected job loss. At that moment, I thought I had developed a strong resilience to adversity, but the situation felt unbearable. It wasn’t just my challenge; it was intertwined with my daughter’s future, and, as a result, it felt like my entire identity as a person was at stake.

You’re Suffering Because You’re Strong

This experience led me to seek help through psychosomatic medicine, where I was diagnosed with conversion disorder. It was a bewildering condition where my hands wouldn’t cooperate, particularly when cooking—although I was able to play the piano. This physical manifestation of emotional turmoil provided a unique lens through which I learned about resilience and recovery. Through psychological therapy, I came to realize that the challenges of parenting can sometimes pile up.

However, despite these struggles, healing and overcoming adversity are always possible. When I murmured, ‘I thought only those who are mentally weak suffer from mental disorders,’ my slender male psychiatrist nodded firmly and replied, ‘Weak people don’t suffer mentally because they avoid facing their problems.’

As I regained my strength, I learned new ways to cope with stress, which ultimately helped me better support my daughter in achieving her dreams. My personal experiences have shown me that parenting doesn't diminish our ability to pursue personal aspirations; rather, it can enrich them. Every setback can be a setup for a comeback.

So, to parents facing similar situations: remember that while the journey may be difficult, it is also possible to emerge with renewed strength and greater understanding. In time, you too can transform your adversities into stepping stones toward doubling your success in both family life and personal ambitions.
