Emotions in Parenting

As parents, we often encounter moments that challenge our patience. It’s not uncommon to witness a fellow parent yelling at their child in frustration. In those instances, I sometimes feel a twinge of envy. For them, it appears to be a natural expression of emotion towards their children. However, my journey into motherhood was different. I was initially apprehensive about parenting, particularly about raising a daughter.

The Challenges of Caution

Being cautious about my approach to parenting stemmed from my reluctance to embrace motherhood fully. I wanted to protect my daughter while also allowing her room to explore her emotions. But this kind of cautiousness inevitably brought about its own stresses and tensions. Instead of letting those negative feelings bubble over and result in harmful outbursts, I chose to implement what I refer to as 'safety valves' in my daily life.

Finding Artistic Outlets

For me, these safety valves meant immersing myself in creative pursuits such as reading mangas and light novels. Engaging with these artistic forms allowed me to process my feelings in a healthy way. It created a balance that diverted my stress and tension, enabling me to step back and regroup before addressing any parenting challenges. Where some parents might gravitate towards social media for an escape, I found solace in literature and art. This choice not only nurtured my creativity but also positively impacted my relationship with my daughter.

In embracing these artistic activities, I discovered a side of myself that I hadn't fully explored before becoming a parent. My safety valves provided a channel to express my feelings and cultivate my passions. I turned my newfound balance into a productive outlet, eventually leading me to become a composer. This journey taught me that nurturing creativity is just as vital to parenthood as imparting values and guidance to my child.

Heads Up for Good Parents

For parents who find joy in nurturing their children, the idea of needing creative outlets may not often come to mind. However, I wholeheartedly recommend finding your own 'safety valves.' For even one fierce word from you could haunt your children for the lifetime. “注意1秒、怪我一生”(chui-ichibyo, kega-isshoh) is a Japanese saying, meaning “ even one moment of carelessness will lead to a lifetime wound”.

Delve into artistic endeavors that resonate with you and provide you with a much-needed escape. Whether it’s painting, watching movies, or even learning musical instruments, these activities can serve as a brilliant counterbalance to the sometimes overwhelming nature of parenting.

Parenthood Trickles with Creativity

Though my experience in parenthood began with hesitation and caution, employing creative outlets transformed my life. Please remember, nurturing your own creativity can make a significant difference in how you handle the ups and downs of parenthood. For example, my daughter got into her dream university, although she failed to get in to her dream high school. By finding your safety valves, you may discover a new realm of joy and fulfillment that enriches both your life and your child's.
