The Wisdom of Moubosansen
The Chinese proverb 孟母三遷の教え (Moubosansen no oshie) is also well-known in Japan. It refers to the story of Mencius (372–289 BC), also known as Mengzi—a Confucian philosopher during China’s Warring States Period. This ancient lesson emphasizes the importance of a child’s environment in shaping their development. Mencius’ mother famously moved house three times to find the ideal setting for her son to grow up in. Her actions reflect a timeless truth: a child’s surroundings can greatly influence their potential and ability to learn.
Surprising Differences Between Locations
Before becoming a parent, I worked as an English teacher for children aged 4 to 8. Through that experience, I witnessed firsthand how different environments can impact learning. I taught the exact same curriculum from Monday to Friday in five different classrooms—and the differences were striking.
In Location A, the children quickly grasped concepts and showed strong understanding. But in Location B, despite the same teaching method and content, the students struggled.
All five classes were in the same ward—Koto Ward, Tokyo—which shows that even subtle changes in environment can make a significant difference.
You Hold the Key to Your Child’s Future
As a parent, you have the power to shape your child’s environment. Choosing the right surroundings for their education can unlock their potential. Even if you’re already education-conscious, understanding how environments differ—even within the same city—can be key to creating the best opportunities.
This isn’t about labeling children—it’s about recognizing how environment shapes opportunity. I adored every child I taught, regardless of how quickly they grasped the material. Every child holds beauty, and every parent has the power to create spaces where that beauty can flourish.
Just like Mencius’ mother, being intentional about your child’s surroundings can lead to a brighter, happier future.
Be proud: you are the architect of your child’s joy, success, and ultimately, a better world.
