However, as a composer and pianist, I can attest that this is far from the truth. Even the most gifted young musicians face immense pressure and must invest countless hours into practice to achieve their full potential. The belief that genius guarantees an easy path is misleading; in reality, prodigies often encounter unique challenges as they transition into adulthood.

Hidden Dedication and Sacrifice

Witnessing the life of a piano prodigy reveals that true talent requires unwavering dedication. My own piano teacher showcased this firsthand. Precisely this prodigy pianist/teacher is my piano teacher’s teacher, who was said to be one of “Seven Hungarian Child Prodigies”. This famous seven pianists group was performing as children at big stages in all over Europe. My teacher presented me with his prodigy teacher’s score that was nearly blackened with his handwritten articulation notes; in fact, there were more annotations than actual musical notes. This level of detail is a testament to the rigorous practice and commitment needed to refine one's skills. It’s a crucial reminder that every great musician, regardless of their early talent, must engage in exhaustive practice to truly master their art.

In Japan there’s a saying ”二十歳過ぎればただの人”, translating “Even a prodigy becomes an ordinary person after 20 years old”.

Lessons from the Greats

One of my most memorable experiences was attending a workshop led by the legendary Stevie Wonder in California. When asked about the secret behind his musical prowess, his answer was both simple and profound: “Because I loved it and spent long hours to learn.” This insight perfectly encapsulates the journey of a music genius; while they may have innate ability, it is the long hours of hard work and the passion for their craft that distinguishes them. Similarly, raising children to reach their full potential requires commitment and love over the long term. Without these essential ingredients, nurturing a child toward greatness becomes an illusion.
