Why forgetting Self-Care
As parents, we often hear the adage, 'You can't pour from an empty cup.' This is especially true when it comes to balancing work and parenthood. Many of us feel compelled to prioritize our responsibilities over our own health, believing that it shows dedication. However, neglecting your health can have dire consequences, both for you and for your children.
Opposite Consequences
In my own experience, dedicating long hours to work while simultaneously raising my daughter left me facing significant health issues. I worked tirelessly until the Tokyo Tower lights dimmed at midnight, convinced this was the way to achieve success. Unfortunately, this took a toll on my physical well-being. A young doctor could hardly believe the poor results of my health check-up. It took me two years to recover, which was a tremendous loss of time.
Breaking the Social Myth
There's a common misconception that parents must devote their entire being to their children, sacrificing everything else in the process. This myth often leads to a cycle of neglect, where parents sacrifice their health and happiness for the sake of their children's welfare. The truth is, if you are healthy, your children will also benefit from your well-being. You will be better equipped to manage your work and parental duties when you prioritize self-care.
To illustrate, consider the flight safety announcement: 'Put on your oxygen mask before helping others.' This universal guidance provides a clear message: you must secure your own well-being before you can effectively care for others. If parents are feeling unwell, understressed, or overwhelmed, the immediate supervision and emotional support their children need can be compromised. Thus, investing time in your health is not just a personal choice; it’s an essential step for the entire family’s well-being.
Moreover, creating a balance allows you to be present for your children and ensure you're succeeding at work. When you are healthy and energetic, you can actively engage with your children, create cherished memories, and enhance your productivity at work. This holistic approach leads to a more satisfying and fulfilling life for both you and your children.
Please remember, never trade your health for work or parenthood unless it is a life-and-death situation. The aim should always be to nurture yourself first, as this ultimately benefits your children and ensures that your work is sustainable. Take a moment to reflect on your current priorities and consider how you can reschedule your routine. After all, a healthy parent leads to healthy children and a thriving family life.
