The Low Success Rate of Romantic Love
How many romantic relationships have you had that made you seriously think about marriage—or at least a lasting partnership? Most of us have a few that linger in memory, for better or worse. For me, there were four. Four romances that felt meaningful enough to imagine a future together. And yet, my husband isn’t part of that story. Despite a 0% success rate in those relationships, I’ve come to realize that the value of love isn’t always measured by how long it lasts.
The Hidden Side of Parenting
Interestingly, many of my friends who have faced the hardships of divorce or stressful relationship still lead fulfilling parental lives. One friend, for instance, feels immense pride in her two adult sons, often sharing delightful stories about their achievements and character. It's heartwarming to witness the joy she derives from their relationship, even though she didn't actively raise them. This highlights an essential truth: engagement and love in parenting can manifest in various forms, regardless of one's romantic history.
100% Wellness Beyond Romantic Success
In the realm of happiness, the PERMA concept developed by Dr. Martin Seligman offers valuable insights into wellness. According to this framework, well-being consists of several elements: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement. It emphasizes that one can find happiness without excelling in every area. While many chase the idea of 'having it all,' embracing our unique paths can foster contentment. Romantic love may require luck and isn’t guaranteed for everyone. Yet, parenting is a privilege and responsibility that can be embraced by anyone willing to pour love into their children's lives, regardless of their romantic experiences.
In short, it’s meaningful to recognize that the narrative of love and marriage doesn’t define our worth or happiness. Each individual's journey through romantic love and parenting shapes their story. Embracing life's complexities can lead to deeper connections, personal growth, and ultimately, happiness. Love may not always manifest in the ways we expect, but the bonds we forge with our children and the joy we derive from nurturing those relationships are always profoundly fulfilling.
